K'oomtk Drop-in Centre for Young Adults

K'oomtk Drop-in Centre for Young Adults

K’oomtk is the Sm'algyax word for hope. This space is to complement the programs delivered by Change Makers' Education Society, including Soar, our young adult housing initiative for housing insecure youth aged 18-30. Cultural Learning Connections, our Community Adult Literacy project and Raven Tales Revival, our Indigenous Community Adult Literacy project to address Truth and Reconciliation by providing meaningful volunteer opportunities for youth aged 15-30.

The drop-in centre will connect youth with cultural mentors and meaningful recreational activities. It is expected that the youth that access this space will have deeper community connections and friendships, develop a sense of pride and be confident to share their learning and skills with the community. By providing safe recreation, community connection and boosting esteem, the number of youth participating in crime is expected to decrease.

Here's what we've been working on

Our Blog

Get in the know, be in the know!

Short days are coming to an end!

December 2022

Since our last update, we have done so much. It's been a whirlwind. Our youth took part in making gifts for the Residential school survivors. Pictured here, they are helping to make No-Sew blankets. We had our Poetic Energy Workshop and we made handmade poppies in honour of Remembrance Day. We made homemade planters and string art so far this month, with plans to celebrate solstice using light up batons, poi, fiber optics and more.
Note: We will be closing December 24th until January 2nd. You can find our January calendars by clicking here. You will leave this page and go to our home page.

What to expect in January! On January 25th, Change Makers' Education Society turns 6! We are looking to the community for support. We hope to see you there!

Our 6 day celebration will have these event dates.

January 25th, we are hosting a Scrabble Tournament starting at 6pm. At the golf course. The cost of entry for each team of 2 is $60.

January 26th, from 3pm-9pm, we are celebrating Family Literacy Week! This year's theme is Play, Sort and Measure. We will have puzzles and other activities. Drop-in at K'oomtk anytime today, located in Suite 151 in the Ocean Centre Mall. Everyone welcome. This event is free!

January 27th, from 3pm-9pm, we are celebrating Family Literacy Day. This year's theme is Celebrate Your Heritage. This free event is also happening at K'oomtk (Suite 151, Ocean Centre Mall).  Drop in anytime between 3pm and 9pm.

January 28th, starting at 3pm is our Virtual Quiz fundraiser! This sounds like fun. A team of 6 will be $60 so round up those friends and get your thinking caps on. K'oomtk will be closed for this.

January 29th, starting at 3pm is a community talent show with an open mic, poetry slam! We will be hosting the event at the Sunset Lounge and it's pay $6 at the door to enjoy all the shenanigans.

January 30th, from 3pm-9pm we will have Activism through Art! Get passionate about local and global issues happening right now. What is your favourite cause? Let's make some art!

The summer fun is almost done!

September 2022

What a summer! We actually had one here in good ol' Prince Rupert. Well, let's just say it was longer than usual. If you haven't checked out the youth centre yet, you really should.

We were recently part of the Friendship House block party! That was pretty awesome. What else have we been up to, you ask? Well, we had our first Living Life to the Full programs. One for youth 13-18 and the other for adults. We also held the UpSkills 4 Work, internally, as a practice run for the public. We plan to offer that in the near future and of course, we have our usual programs. Change Makers' Education Society, the host of the K'oomtk Drop In Centre for youth, will be taking part in Truth and Reconciliation week events in co-operation with the Friendship House and Gitmaxmak'ay Society. Pictured here are a couple of our youth staff who went out on International Youth day to clean up along the waterfront. Way to go!

Coming up in October.

Daily from 3:30pm-5pm you can drop-in for study and snack time.

Sundays - For the first three weeks we have Go By Bike programs including a wrap up to go to the swimming pool. We will then be back to our regular program which is Storytelling and Digital Literacy. Share your stories with others and work with technology. Personal stories, fictional stories, short or long. We'd love to hear them. Digital literacy can be whatever you'd like. Make a collage or type your story and add pictures and backgrounds. Whatever you can think of, we're here to help.

Mondays - Make and Mend & Beading. Stop in and use whatever fabric and tools you need. Our staff is here to show where things are and make sure you are supported through your project. We have plenty of beads and materials for beading as well.

Tuesdays - Book Club and Writing Workshop. This day is all about words. Do you like reading and writing? Well this is the day for you. Join our book club and read relevant books for indigenous issues. Suggest a book that you would like to read. Our writing workshop is later in the evening. Writing topics include self reflection, how you're doing, what your plans are or what is important to you in society today.

Wednesdays - Games Night. The format had changed a little for the warmer weather. We were going to the courthouse lawn for outdoor games, weather permitting. This will probably be moving back indoors for the fall and winter.

Thursdays - Peer Support. As always, if you have questions or concerns about any local or global issues, we are here to discuss that with you. No judgment, no pressure.

Fridays - Fall Craft night. If you have any crafts that you would like to work on for the season, stop in. You are welcome to use our materials and tools. Our staff can help you find materials you may not have thought of or make suggestions when you run into problems.

Saturdays - Music and Drama & Indie Movie. Each Saturday, we will explore music, performance art and theatre. Whether you are new to this type of expression or have done this since you could remember or anywhere in between, let's have some fun with this. Stop by and check it out!

Indie Movies in the evening. If you are interested movies that focus on current local and global social, we'd love to invite you to join us and have a short discussion afterwards about your thoughts.

Spring has sprung. We had some fun!

June 2022

We try to keep busy!
Some things we have been working on are our community art mosaic, a CD mosaic and some props for our upcoming community celebration.

The wings are coming along nicely. Stop in and check them out. We have started working on another mosaic made of CD cases and with a design by Michelle Stoney themed Every Child Matters. GoByBike week happened at the end of May. Be sure to register for the fall GoByBike weeks because there will be more.

We are also working on a chrysalis for an upcoming celebration which is pictured here with one of our young adults and our executive director. Find more on our Instagram page by clicking here.

We had a drum making workshop with John Lincoln. We also started making cedar roses; the first step in an upcoming project. Another project we started is the community art mosaic, pictured here.

We would like you to know that our young adults get to enjoy two days a week of homemade food and, as part of the Second Harvest program, we get sandwiches from Safeway regularly for our youth to enjoy.

Let's get spooky!

October 2021

Well, getting spooky is only involved in one of our programs this month and that is our Friday night - movie night.  Of course, there are many opportunities to stop in and create your own spookiness via decorations, costumes or stories.

On Saturdays, we have beading in the afternoon and art night. Art night could be focused on making decorations if that's what you're interested in.

Sundays, we have our Zine making workshop. This is where you can write about something are you passionate about; that you feel more people should know about or understand. This can be in the form of a poem or an article/essay. You can share art, (hand drawn or digital) or pictures that can be included in the zine.

Monday's program is Make and Mend. During this program, you can get some help with sewing if needed. You will have access to our sewing machines and a wide range of fabric. Or you can just discuss an idea you have for a project and get feedback.

On Tuesdays, we have our peer support group. We have youth workers that can help you with any issues you may be facing. If they aren't able to help you, they can find someone who can.

There is also a video editing workshop on Tuesday evenings. Learn ways to edit videos to make them more dynamic with the help of our videographer.

On Wednesday afternoon, we have a homework drop in where one of our staff or volunteers will be available to help with whatever courses you may be struggling with.

And lastly, on Thursdays, we have a game night! We have plenty of game options for young adults to enjoy.

You can stop in anytime that we are open to get help with anything listed above.
